Intermittent Fasting

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

  1. Weight loss

The intermittent fast makes you eat fewer meals hence you take up less calories. Intermittent fasting enhances hormone function that facilitates weight loss. When in the fasted state the body has a lower insulin level, higher growth hormone (glucagon) levels and increased amounts of morphine. This causes breakdown of body fat and facilitates its use for energy. Therefore causing weight loss.

  1. Boosts metabolism

Short fasts promoted by intermittent fasting increase metabolism. Intermittent fasting causes weight loss because the restriction of food followed by regular eating can help stimulate your metabolism. Short fasts are more effective than long term calorie restrictions that can cause great havoc on the body’s metabolism.  Weight loss and muscle loss go hand in hand. Muscle tissues are what burn through calories hence having less muscle leads to a drop in the body’s ability to metabolize food. Intermittent fasting keeps the body’s metabolism running smoothly by maintaining muscle tissues as much as possible. Intermittent fasting works on both sides that is it increase your metabolic rate (increases calories out) and reduces the amount of food you eat (reduces calories in).

  1. Improved Glucose Tolerance

For diabetes patients fasting is a good way to normalize glucose and even out glucose variability. As the body burns through stored fuel in the form of body fat the accumulation of glucose in the body lessens allowing cells in the muscles and liver to grow increasingly responsive to insulin.

  1. Boosts immune system

Fasting has the capability to regenerate the entire immune system by boosting the body’s production of white blood cells which is how the body fights of infections. Fasting in cycles, as in intermittent fasting, enables the body to get rid of inefficient parts of the immune system and replace them with newly generated immune system cells.

  1. Stimulates brain function

Intermittent fasting stimulates the brain in the following ways:

  • It promotes the growth of neurons
  • Aids in recovery after a stroke or any other brain injury
  • It enhances memory performance

  1. Establishing routine

Having strict eating times followed by fasting periods everyday makes the body develop a routine. It makes you be able to recognize your hunger cycles. Therefore you will be able to tell when you are hungry from when you are not.

  1. Reduces oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is defined as the imbalance in the body’s production of reactive oxygen and its antioxidative defense and may lead to chronic diseases and cancers. Weight loss caused by regular fasts can lead to reduction in the body’s level of oxidative stress therefore preventing the development of these undesirable conditions. A greater antioxidant capability is a he benefit brought about by the intermittent fast and should not be overlooked.

  1. Improved heart function

Low body fat levels are important for cardiac functions to go on well. Intermittent fasting causes reductions in the body’s cholesterol levels. Less body fat takes pressure off the kidneys, lowering blood pressure and increasing the body’s production of growth hormones. These leads to proper functioning of the heart
